While doing a bit of research about Pinoy cartoon characters, one unexpected result that came up was a short article about
Kapitan Cortal. Captain who again!?

Kapitan Cortal |
Apparently there was a comic strip hero back then who was named after
Cortal. For those of you who aren't familiar, this is a pain relief medicine more popular these days for ill-advised reasons. But during the 1950's it would seem that it was widely acclaimed for its benefits and was most likely the pain reliever of choice in the country. I mean why else would someone as renowned as
Antonio S. Velasquez put his name out there and agree to create a cartoon character for this product if it would jeopardize his reputation? Back then the good "captain" can be grouped in the company of some of the most popular pinoy comic characters such as Dyesebel and Darna but in a bizarre twist of fate Kapitan Cortal along with the product he stood for was lost to obscurity.
These days the brand Cortal can still be found in pharmacies with different variants for flu, fever, and pain. As for the brand's super hero, he has long been out of circulation but his legacy can still be felt given that the product continues to evolve and diversify despite its vague commercial presence. Although Kapitan Cortal's moment may have been fleeting, he was able to make his way into the hearts and minds of many filipinos, helping establish a reputation of trustworthiness that had been passed on from one generation to the next.
